Press release: Germany’s first UN Audit on the Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Germany yet to Achieve Active Citizenship for Persons with Disabilities

Important days for the rights of people with disabilities in Germany lie ahead: On March 26 and 27, 2015, Germany’s first state report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) will be audited by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“Not only the state report, but also empirical research,” says Professor Anne Waldschmidt, University of Cologne, “clearly shows that Germany still has substantial problems in enabling Active Citizenship for persons with disabilities.” Waldschmidt is head of the International Research Unit Disability Studies (iDiS) representing Germany as partner in the EU-funded project DISCIT – Making Persons with Disabilities Full Citizens.
